Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Los Angeles will take place March 31, 2012 at Veterans Park in Sylmar, California. This will be an event to give Vietnam Veterans the Welcome Home they never received. All Veterans are welcome but this event will focus on those who served in Vietnam.

Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans 2012 Planning Committee

We are pleased to announce the formation of 2012 WHVV Day Committee. We will be working with a well established successful non profit in the North East San Fernando Valley. We are seeking Volunteers to participate in all aspects of the event. The event will take place in March of 2012.

The site has been reserved and we must now begin our planning for the event. You can participate in any part of the project.

Yesterday was our first Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day LA Picnic.

The day went very well and could not have been possible with the help and generous support of various individuals.

 

The Los Angeles Daily News sent Troy Anderson to cover the event and he spent hours interviewing Vietnam Veterans and others who were not. He provided a good perspective. Hans Gutknecht a Staff Photographer for the Daily News spent much time not only taking photos but getting to know some of the Vietnam Veterans.

On April 8, 2008 the Los Angeles City Council adopted a Resolution Declaring March 30 as the official Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day in Los Angeles, (council file # 08-0757).

In observation of the event, members of your community will be having a Picnic to give Vietnam Veterans and their families and opportunity to come and share their stories. This will be the first event since the City has adopted the resolution and we look forward to seeing it grow each year.

 

This is not a City Sponsored event and is just and opportunity for Los Angeles residents to gather and welcome home those who served in Vietnam.

 

The Picnic will is a “pot luck” and attendees are being requested to bring their favorite dish and or meal.  While we are requesting attendees to bring food, it will not be a requirement to attend.

It is with a grateful heart that I am able to announce the Official Recognition and establishment of the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day in Los Angeles.

 

The date is set as March 30^th in accordance with the US House and US Senate Bills H. RES289 and S. 189, both of which have passed.

 

The Board of the North Hollywood North East Neighborhood Council placed my request on the Agenda and voted to support the issue. It was also requested that City Council members Tony Cardenas and Wendy Greuel submit it to the full City Council for a vote.

 

After being submitted by Council member Cardenas and seconded by Council member Parks, the motion passed and March 30^th was adopted as the official date.

 

My staff and I are in the process of forming a non-profit and it will be up and running within the month. Our purpose will be to develop a fit Welcome Home event for March 30, 2009.

 

We are reaching out to Veterans Groups, Community Groups and individuals who want to be a part of this long over due project.

 

At present our Blog is now up and running. As soon as the Web site is developed, it will be activated as well.

Dear Messrs. Greuel and Cardenas:

 

       At its monthly meeting held on March 13, 2008, the Board of North Hollywood North East Neighborhood Council discussed as an agenda item the U.S. House of Representatives Resolution (H. Res. 189) designating March 30^th as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” to honor those Americans who served in that conflict.   After Board and public discussion on this issue, and a motion having been presented by David Hernandez, we voted unanimously (8-0) to express our support for the action of the U.S. Congress and to ask that the City of Los Angeles similarly make such designation and honor the day accordingly.   I enclose a copy of our Minutes reflecting this discussion.

 

       We request that this matter be given a Council file number by one of you on our behalf so this issue can go before the City Council, and that a response to this letter be forthcoming to us prior to March 30^th.    Thank you for your courtesy and consideration in this regard.
